Motorcycles are dangerous Essay
The road is filled with cars and motorcycles but what makes motorcycles seem dangerous, is it the motorcycle itself, is it the drivers who are driving side by side with motorcycles or is it the dare devils riding motorcycles? There is a saying for motorcycles, ââ¬Å"Its not if one fall, its when one falls. â⬠This is said because beginners are notorious for dropping their motorcycles. Motorcycles themselves are not dangerous. Itââ¬â¢s the non-experienced drivers and the drivers around them, that pose a threat to motorcycle riders all over the world. The thing with both motorcycles and cars, is if one were to take all the safety classes and course, they would then be less likely to come across accidents on the road. Itââ¬â¢s also surprisingly important to know about the vehicle that you drive. Whether that be a car or a motorcycle, because if you know about the mechanics behind it, there is less of a chance that one would get into an accident caused by a mechanical error. Riders who peacock (the act of dressing in color, very noticeable) and wear proper gear are less likely to be in an accident or be hurt in one. Drinking and riding is a big no-no, on a motorcycle the rider need to have full control of the motorcycle and surroundings, drinking even the legal limit will impair a rider far more than in a car. The standard thought is motorcycles are dangerous, but the truth is they are as dangerous as drivers make them or can be even safer than cars if the driver takes the proper initiative and audited. A motorcycle is a tool of transportation, the way it is used determines whether it is dangerous or safe. If an inexperienced person gets on a motorcycle and expects to go on a ride, most likely that person will end up in an accident and in the hospital. It is important to learn to use the tool, what it can do and how knowing all the right steps to staying safe. Motorcycleminds. org recommends that every rider take the beginning rider education class and advanced education rider class to protect oneself and others on the road. These educational classes teach one everything from tire pressure to lane sharing properly. One of the acronyms taught in these classes that beginning to expert cyclist use every time they hop on a motorcycle is T-CLOCS and it stands for tires and wheels, controls, lights, oil, chassis, stands. T-CLOCS is a MSC (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) checklist to keep siders alert and safe. The full in depth checklist can be found on http://www. msf-usa. org/downloads/t-clocsinspectionchecklist. pdf . Without T-CLOCS riders might be going out on and unsafe motorcycle asking for an accident to happen. Knowing how a motorcycle works is just half the game, practice allows for one to perfect the technique of riding making safer and safer every day but still realizing that one always need to be in control but the same can be said for drivers of cars even pedestrians on bicycles. All a motorcycle is a tool and like any other tool it can be classified as dangerous only if miss used and abused. A nail gun can be very dangerous if used improperly but when used properly it can do a professional clean job without any accidents. Broken, worn out parts can be replaced, a human life canââ¬â¢t, safety is only as safe as the driver makes it motorcycles are not dangerous. Choosing proper riding gear will increase minimizing damage in an accident and will maximize how visible the rider is to others on the road. This is where Peacocking and safety should unite to minimize falling in blind spots of other drivers. Covering oneself in riding gear may not seem very stylish but it beats being cheese in a cheese grinder. When driving a car the people in it use seat belts and like to have airbags with outstanding crash ratings. To provide the same level of protection as a car, motorcycle riders should consider wearing proper DOT (Department Of Transportation) approved gear to ensure crash test ratings. When it comes to gear and its expenses it is important to think that the gear is the only thing between the rider and asphalt in an accident. Starting out from ground up with gear, proper boots that have ankle support and have close toes is very important. Having proper boots will prevent skin burns and many accidental rolled ankles. Depending on the kind of riding being done leg and knee pads can be bought but thick jeans or protective riding pants suffice in most cases. Hands that are not protected in an accident can be badly damaged but it is easy to prevent this by having sturdy gloves deigned for the type of riding going on. Jackets can be safe, flashy and fashionable, why not have all three working together? Most motorcycles jackets do, they will provide protective padding, materials that are comfortable but can handle road rash so that skin doesnââ¬â¢t, and while being fashionable usually they make riders more visible to others. As Basem Wasef Writer of Motorcycle Gear 101 on about. com said,ââ¬Å"An old saying goes something like this: If youââ¬â¢ve got a $20 head, buy yourself a $20 helmet. â⬠DOT approved helmets that provide three quarters to full face helmets are crucial in providing proper protections. Having all the appropriate riding gear makes falls that will happen, be less harsh and cuts the dangers of riding by a great deal. People wearing gear properly will be safe like a driver driving in a car with good crash ratings. Accidents happen in cars and motorcycles, being ready for them take many of the danger out of riding motorcycles. The most dangerous thing on a motorcycle is a fatal crash. Most people donââ¬â¢t realize is that a majority of fatal motorcycle accidents are caused by the misuse of motorcycle or riding under the influence. ââ¬Å"One out of three motorcycle accidents involves a rider who is driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Thirty-five percent of fatal motorcycle accidents involve a speeding motorcycle rider. â⬠Keller and Keller law firm. Sixty-eight percent that leaves about thirty-two percent for other fatalities to be cause by things cars, trucks and motorcycles fault accidents. Following the law will prevent most motorcycle accidents. All vehicles on the road can be dangerous, if misused, not just motorcycles. Falling on a motorcycle happens but riders keep their head held high just like a teen that crashes their first car. Remembering T-CLOCS can save a riders life and the life of the surrounding people. Dressing to what, a peacock-cock-cock peacock allows on to standout and stay safe on the road. Motorcycles are not dangerous vehicles used properly, skateboards and BMX bikes can be more dangerous. As a avid motorcycle rider of four years I strongly urge anyone interested in riding in MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation). Keep the roads safe for future generations. You Suck: A Love Story Chapter 19~20
Chapter Nineteen Our Dead Homeys The vampires sat side by side on the bare futon frame, watching as a five-legged bug limped up the big front window of the loft. Tommy thought that the rhythm of the bug's steps made a for a danceable backbeat ââ¬â thought he might be able to set music to it, if he knew how to write music. Suite for Angst and Limping Bug, he'd call it. ââ¬Å"Nice bug,â⬠Tommy said. ââ¬Å"Yeah,â⬠Jody said. We should save it for Abby, Jody thought. She was feeling guilty about having bitten the girl ââ¬â not so much because of the violation, because obviously the kid had been willing, but because she felt as if she really didn't have any choice. She had been injured and her predator nature told her to survive, whatever the cost, which is what bothered her. Was her humanity drifting away? ââ¬Å"The Animals are going to come for us now,â⬠Tommy said. He was feeling angry, betrayed by his old crew, but most of all he felt separate from them now. He felt separate from everyone. Tomorrow was Christmas and he didn't even want to call his parents because they were a different species now. What do you buy for an inferior species? ââ¬Å"It's just the Animals,â⬠Jody said. ââ¬Å"We'll be safe.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'll bet that's what Elijah thought, too, and they got him.â⬠ââ¬Å"We should go get him,â⬠Jody said. She imagined Elijah Ben Sapir, standing in the full sun by the Ferry Building, tourists passing him, wondering why someone would put a statue there. Would the brass protect him? Tommy checked his watch. ââ¬Å"We'd never get there and back in time. I tried that yesterday.â⬠ââ¬Å"How could you do that to him, Tommy? He was one of us.â⬠ââ¬Å"One of us? He was going to kill us, if you remember. He kind of did kill us. I resent that. Besides, if you're covered in bronze, what does it matter if you're underwater? I was just trying to get him out of sight so we could think about our future without him being part of it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Right. Okay,â⬠Jody said. ââ¬Å"Sorry.â⬠Future? She'd lived with a half-dozen guys, none had ever willingly talked about the future before. And she and Tommy had a supersized buttload of future ahead of them as long as someone didn't catch them sleeping. ââ¬Å"Maybe we really should leave the City,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"No one would know about us in a new city.â⬠ââ¬Å"I was thinking we should get a Christmas tree,â⬠Tommy said. Jody looked away from the bug. ââ¬Å"That's a thought, or we could put some mistletoe up, put on Christmas carols, and stand outside waiting for Santa until the sun comes up and incinerates us. How's that sound?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nobody appreciates your sarcasm, missy. I'm just trying to get a handle on normal. Three months ago I was stocking groceries in Indiana, looking at community college, driving around in my crappy car, wishing I had a girlfriend, and wishing that there was some potential for something to happen beyond getting a job with benefits and living the same life as my dad. Now I have a girlfriend, and superpowers, and a bunch of people want to kill me, and I don't know how to act. I don't know what to do next. And it's going to be that way forever. Forever! I'm going to be scared out of my mind forever! I can't deal with forever.â⬠He'd been barking at her, but she resisted the urge to snap back. He was nineteen, not a hundred and fifty ââ¬â he didn't even have the tools for being an adult, let alone being immortal. ââ¬Å"I know,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Tomorrow night, first thing, we'll hire a car, go get Elijah, and pick up a Christmas tree on the way back. How's that sound?â⬠ââ¬Å"Hiring a car? That sounds exotic.â⬠ââ¬Å"It'll be like prom.â⬠Was she being too patronizing? ââ¬Å"You don't have to do that,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"I'm sorry I'm acting like a weenie.â⬠ââ¬Å"But you're my weenie,â⬠Jody said. ââ¬Å"Take me to bed.â⬠Still holding her hand, he stood, then pulled her up into his arms. ââ¬Å"We'll be okay, right?â⬠She nodded and kissed him, feeling for just a second like a girl in love instead of a predator. She immediately felt a resurgence of shame over feeding on Abby. The doorbell rang. ââ¬Å"Did you know we had a doorbell?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nope.â⬠ââ¬Å"You can't beat a dead whore in the morning,â⬠said Nick Cavuto cheerfully, because apparently, everyone loves a dead hooker, despite what certain writer types might think. They were standing in the alley off Mission Street. Dorothy Chin ââ¬â short, pretty, and whip-smart ââ¬â snorted a laugh and checked the thermometer probe she'd stuck in the deceased's liver like a meat thermometer into a roast. ââ¬Å"She hasn't been dead four hours, guys.â⬠Rivera rubbed his temples and felt his bookstore slipping away, along with his marriage. He'd known the marriage had been going for a while, but he was feeling a little brokenhearted about the bookstore. He figured he knew, but he asked anyway. ââ¬Å"Cause of death?â⬠ââ¬Å"Toothy blow job,â⬠Cavuto said. ââ¬Å"Yes, Alphonse,â⬠said Dorothy with a tad too much sincerity, ââ¬Å"I'd have to concur with Detective Cavuto, she died of a toothy blow job.â⬠ââ¬Å"It just pisses some guys off,â⬠Cavuto added, ââ¬Å"a professional without skills.â⬠ââ¬Å"Guy just snapped her neck and took his money back,â⬠said Dorothy with a big grin. ââ¬Å"So a broken neck?â⬠said Rivera, mentally waving goodbye to a whole set of first-edition Raymond Chandlers, ten-to-six workdays, golfing on Mondays. Cavuto snorted this time. ââ¬Å"Her head's turned around the wrong way, Rivera. What did you think it was?â⬠ââ¬Å"Seriously,â⬠Dorothy Chin said, ââ¬Å"I have to do the autopsy to be sure, but offhand that's the obvious cause. I'd also say she's probably lucky to go that way. She's HIV positive and it looks like the disease had developed into full-blown AIDS.â⬠ââ¬Å"How do you know that?â⬠ââ¬Å"See these sarcomas on her feet.â⬠Chin had removed one of the hooker's shoes ââ¬â she pointed to open sores on the corpse's foot and ankle. Rivera sighed. He didn't want to ask, but he asked anyway, ââ¬Å"What about blood loss?â⬠Dorothy Chin had done the autopsies on two of the previous victims and cringed a little. It was a pattern. They'd all been terminally ill, they'd all died of a broken neck, and they'd all shown evidence of extreme blood loss, but no external wounds ââ¬â not even a needle mark. ââ¬Å"Can't tell out here.â⬠Cavuto had lost his cheery manner now. ââ¬Å"So we spend Christmas day canvassing dirtbags to see if anyone saw anything?â⬠At the end of the alley, uniforms were still talking to the grimy homeless man who had called in the murder. He was trying to get them to spring for a bottle of whiskey ââ¬â because it was Christmas. Rivera didn't want to go home, but he didn't want to spend a day trying to find out what he already knew. He checked his watch. ââ¬Å"What time was sunrise this morning?â⬠he asked. ââ¬Å"Oh, wait,â⬠Cavuto said, patting down his pockets, ââ¬Å"I'll check my almanac.â⬠Dorothy Chin snorted again, then started giggling. ââ¬Å"Dr. Chin,â⬠Rivera said, tightening down now, ââ¬Å"could you be more precise about the time of death?â⬠Chin picked up on Rivera's tone and went full professional. ââ¬Å"Sure. There's an algorithm for the cooling time of a body. Get me the weather from last night, let me get her back to the morgue and weigh her, and I'll get you a time within ten minutes.â⬠ââ¬Å"What?â⬠Cavuto said to Chin. ââ¬Å"What?â⬠This time to Rivera. ââ¬Å"Winter solstice, Nick,â⬠Rivera said. ââ¬Å"Christmas was originally set at the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. It's eleven-thirty now. I'm betting that four hours ago the sun was just coming up.â⬠ââ¬Å"Uh-huh,â⬠Cavuto said. ââ¬Å"Prostitutes have shitty hours ââ¬â is that what you're saying?â⬠Rivera raised an eyebrow. ââ¬Å"Our guy didn't travel far after sunrise, is what I'm saying. He's going to be around here.â⬠ââ¬Å"I was afraid that's what you were saying,â⬠Cavuto said. ââ¬Å"We're never going to get the bookstore open, are we?â⬠ââ¬Å"Tell the uniforms to look anywhere it's dark: under Dumpsters, in crawl spaces, attics ââ¬â anywhere.â⬠ââ¬Å"Getting warrants on Christmas day might be a problem.â⬠ââ¬Å"You won't need warrants if you get permission from the owners ââ¬â we're not looking to bust anyone living here, we're looking for a murder suspect.â⬠Cavuto pointed to the eight-story brick building that composed one wall of the alley. ââ¬Å"This building has something like eight hundred ministorage units in it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Then you guys had better get started.â⬠ââ¬Å"Where're you going?â⬠ââ¬Å"There was a missing person report on an old guy in North Beach a couple of days ago. I'm going to check it out.â⬠ââ¬Å"Because you don't want to go Dumpster diving for v ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Because,â⬠Rivera cut him off before he could say the V-word, ââ¬Å"he had terminal cancer. His wife assumed he just wandered off and got lost. Now I'm not so sure. Call me if you find anything.â⬠ââ¬Å"Uh-huh.â⬠Cavuto turned to the three uniforms who were interviewing the bum. ââ¬Å"Hey, guys, have I got a merry Christmas detail for you.â⬠The Animals decided to hold a small memorial service for Blue in Chinatown. Troy Lee was already there, as was Lash, who wouldn't go home to his apartment until Blue's body was removed, and Barry, who was Jewish, would be coming there for dinner with his family, as was the tradition in his faith. Plus, the liquor stores in Chinatown were open on Christmas, and if you slipped some money under the counter, you could get firecrackers. The Animals were fairly sure that Blue would have wanted firecrackers at her funeral. The Animals stood in a semicircle, beers in hand, on a playground off Grant Street. The deceased was being honored in absentia ââ¬â in her place was a half-eaten pair of edible panties. From a distance, they looked like a bunch of wastrels mourning a Fruit Roll-Up. ââ¬Å"I'd like to start, if I may,â⬠said Drew. He wore a long overcoat and his hair was tied back with a black ribbon, revealing the target-shaped bruise on his forehead where Jody had hit him with the wine bottle. Out of his coat he pulled a bong the size of a tenor sax, and using a long lighter designed for lighting fireplaces, he sparked that magnificent mama-jama up and bubbled away like a scuba diver having an asthma attack. When he could hold no more, he raised the bong, poured some water on the ground, and croaked, ââ¬Å"To Blue,â⬠which came out in a perfect smoke ring, the sight of which brought tears to everyone's eyes. ââ¬Å"To Blue,â⬠everyone repeated as they placed one hand on the bong and tipped a bit out of their beers. ââ¬Å"To Broo, my nigga,â⬠said Troy Lee's grandma, who had insisted upon joining the ceremony once she realized there would be firecrackers. ââ¬Å"She will be avenged,â⬠said Lash. ââ¬Å"And we'll get our fucking money back,â⬠said Jeff, the big jock. ââ¬Å"Amen,â⬠the Animals said. They had decided on a nondenominational ceremony, as Barry was a Jew, Troy Lee was a Buddhist, Clint was an Evangelical, Drew was a Rastafarian, Gustavo was a Catholic, and Lash and Jeff were heathen stoners. Gustavo had been called in to work that day because someone had to be in the store as long as the front was only boarded up with plywood, so in deference to his beliefs, they had bought some incense and holders and placed a picket fence of smoldering joss sticks around the edible panty. The incense also worked within Troy and Grandma's Buddhist tradition, and Lash pointed out during the ceremony that although they have their differences otherwise, all gods like a good-smellin' ho. ââ¬Å"Amen!â⬠said the Animals again. ââ¬Å"And they're handy for lightin' firecrackers off of,â⬠added Jeff as he bent over an incense stick and set a string cracking. ââ¬Å"Hallelujah!â⬠said the Animals. Each offered to share some kind of memory of Blue, but all of their stories quickly degenerated to orifices and squishiness, and no one wanted to go there in front of Troy's grandma, so instead they threw firecrackers at Clint while he read from the Twenty-third Psalm. Before they cracked the second case of beer, it was decided that after dark, three of them ââ¬â Lash, Troy Lee, and Barry ââ¬â would take Blue from Lash's apartment, load her into the back of Barry's station wagon, and take her out in the middle of the Bay in Barry's Zodiac. (Barry was the diver of the bunch, and had all the cool aquatic stuff. They'd used his spearguns to help take down the old vampire.) Lash braced himself as he opened the apartment door, but to his surprise, there was no smell. He led Barry and Troy into the bedroom, and together they wrestled the rolled-up rug out of the closet. ââ¬Å"It's not heavy enough,â⬠Barry said. ââ¬Å"Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit,â⬠Troy said, trying furiously to unroll the rug. Finally Lash reached down, grabbed the edge of the rug, and whipped it up over his head. There was a thudding sound against the far wall, followed by the jingle of metal, like coins settling. The three Animals stood and stared. ââ¬Å"What are those?â⬠Asked Barry. ââ¬Å"Earrings,â⬠answered Troy. Indeed, there were seven earrings settling on the hardwood floor. ââ¬Å"Not those. Those!â⬠Barry nodded toward two clear, cantaloupe-sized, gelatinous lozenges that quivered on the floor like stranded jellyfish. Lash shivered. ââ¬Å"I've seen them before. My brother used to work in a plant in Santa Barbara that made them.â⬠ââ¬Å"What the fuck are they?â⬠Said Troy, squinting through a drunken haze. ââ¬Å"Those are breast implants,â⬠Lash said. ââ¬Å"What are those wormy things?â⬠asked Barry. There were two translucent sluglike blobs of something stuck to the rug near the edge. ââ¬Å"Looks like window caulk,â⬠said Lash. He noticed that there was a fine blue powder near the edge of the rug. He ran his hand over it, pinched some on his fingers, and sniffed it. Nothing. ââ¬Å"Where'd she go?â⬠asked Barry. ââ¬Å"No idea,â⬠said Lash. Chapter Twenty It's a Wonderful Life Gustavo Chavez had been born the seventh child of a brick maker in a small village in the state of Michoacan, Mexico. At eighteen he married a local girl, the daughter of a farmer, herself a seventh child, and at twenty, with his second child on the way, he crossed the border into the United States, where he lived with a cousin in Oakland, along with a score of other relatives, and worked grueling, twelve-hour days as a laborer, making enough to feed himself and send more money home to his family than he could possibly have made in his father's brickyard. He did this because it was the responsible and right thing to do, and because he had been raised a good Catholic man who, like his father, would provide for his family and no more than two or three mistresses. Each year, about a month before Christmas, he would sneak back across the border to celebrate Christmas with his family, meet any new children that might been born, and make love with his wife, Maria, until they were both so s ore it hurt to walk. In fact, the vision of Maria's inviting thighs would often begin haunting him around Halloween and the hapless night porter would find himself in a state of semiarousal as he swung his soapy mop, to and fro, across fifteen thousand square feet of linoleum every night. Tonight he was in the store alone, and he was feeling far from aroused, for it was Christmas night, and he could not go to mass or take Communion until he confessed. He was feeling deeply ashamed. Christmas night and he hadn't even called Maria ââ¬â hadn't spoken to her for weeks, because like the rest of the Animals, he had gone to Las Vegas, and had given all his money to the blue whore. He had called, of course, after they'd first taken the vampire's art and sold it for so much money, but since then, his life had been a fog of tequila and marijuana and the evil attentions of the blue one. He, a good man, who cared for his family, had never hit his wife, had only cheated with a second cousin and never with a white woman, had been undone by the curse of the blue devil's pussy. La maldicin de la cocha del diablo azul. This is the saddest, loneliest Christmas ever, thought Gustavo as he dragged his mop past the canvas doors leading into the produce-department cooler. I am like the poor cabrn in that book The Pearl, where by simply trying to take advantage of some good fortune, I have lost all that I care about. Okay, I did get drunk for a week and my pearl was a blue whore who fucked the chimichangas out of me, but still, pretty sad. He thought these things in Spanish, so they sounded infinitely more tragic and romantic. Then there came a noise from the cooler, and he was startled for a second. He wrung out his mop, so as to be ready for anything. He didn't like being in the store by himself, but with the front windows broken out, someone had to be here, and because he was far from home, had nowhere else to go, and the union would see that he was paid double time, Gustavo had volunteered. Perhaps if he sent home a little extra, Maria might forget the hundred thousand dollars he'd promised. There, something was moving behind the plastic doors of the cooler, which were waving slightly. The stout Mexican crossed himself and backed out of the produce department, swinging his mop now in quick swaths, leaving barely a hint of dampness on the linoleum. He was by the dairy case now, and a stack of yogurts fell over inside the glass doors, as if someone had shoved them out of the way to look through. Gustavo dropped the mop and ran to the back of the store, saying a Hail Mary peppered with swearwords as he went, wondering if those were footsteps he heard behind him, or the echoes of his own footfalls resounding through the deserted store. Out the front door and away, he chanted in his head. Out the front door and away. He nearly fell rounding the turn at the meat case, his shoes still wet from the mop water. He caught himself on one hand and came up like a sprinter, while reaching back on his belt for his keys as he went. There were footfalls behind him ââ¬â light, slapping ââ¬â bare feet on linoleum, but fast, and close. He couldn't stop to unlock the door when he got there, he couldn't look back, he couldn't turn to look ââ¬â a second of hesitation and he would be lost. He exhaled a long wail and ran right through a rack of candy and gum by the registers. He tumbled over the first register in an avalanche of candy bars and magazines, many of which displayed headlines like I MARRIED BIGFOOT, or SPACE ALIEN CULT TAKES OVER HOLLYWOOD, or vampires hunt our streets, and other such nonsense. Gustavo scrambled out of the pile and was crawling on his belly like a desert lizard scrambling to get across hot sand, when a heavy weight came down on his back, knocking the air out of him. He gasped, trying to get his breath, but something grabbed him by the hair and yanked his head backwards. He heard crackling noises in his ear, smelled something like rotten meat, and gagged. He saw the fluorescent lights, some canned hams, and a very happy cardboard elf making cookies as he was dragged down the aisle and through the doors into the dark back room of the deli like so much lunch meat. Feliz navidad. ââ¬Å"Our first Christmas together,â⬠Jody said, kissing him on the cheek ââ¬â giving his butt a little squeeze through his pj bottoms. ââ¬Å"Did you get me something cute?â⬠ââ¬Å"Hi, Mom,â⬠Tommy said into the phone. ââ¬Å"It's Tommy.â⬠ââ¬Å"Tommy. Sweetheart. We've been calling all day. It just rang and rang. I thought you were going to come home for Christmas.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, you know, Mom, I'm in management at the store now. Responsibilities.â⬠ââ¬Å"Are you working hard enough?â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh yeah, Mom. I'm working ten ââ¬â sixteen hours a day sometimes. Exhausted.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well good. And you have insurance?â⬠ââ¬Å"The best, Mom. The best. I'm nearly bulletproof.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, I suppose that's good. You're not still working that horrible night shift, are you?â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, sort of. In the grocery business, that's where the money is.â⬠ââ¬Å"You need to get on the day shift. You're never going to meet a nice girl working those hours, son.â⬠It was at this point, having heard Mother Flood's admonition, that Jody lifted her shirt and rubbed her bare breasts against him while batting her eyelashes coquettishly. ââ¬Å"But I have met a nice girl, Mom. Her name is Jody. She's studying to be a nun ââ¬â er, teacher. She helps the poor.â⬠It was then that Jody pantsed him, then ran into the bedroom giggling. He caught himself on the counter to keep from tumbling over. ââ¬Å"Whoa.â⬠ââ¬Å"What, son? What's the matter?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nothing, nothing, Mom. I just had a little eggnog with the guys and started to feel it.â⬠ââ¬Å"You're not on the drugs, are you, honey?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, no, no, nothing like that.â⬠ââ¬Å"Because your father has rehab benefits on you until you're twenty-one. We can have one of those interventions if you can find a cheap flight home. I know that Aunt Esther would love to see you, even if you are strung out on the crack.â⬠ââ¬Å"And I her, and I her, Mom. Look, I just called to say Merry Christmas, I'll let you ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Wait, honey, your father wants to say hi.â⬠â⬠ââ¬â go.â⬠ââ¬Å"Hey, Skeeter. Frisco turned you into an ass bandit yet?â⬠ââ¬Å"Hi, Dad. Merry Christmas.â⬠ââ¬Å"Glad you finally called. Your mother was worried sick about you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, you know, the grocery business.â⬠ââ¬Å"You working hard enough?â⬠ââ¬Å"Trying. They're cutting back on our OT ââ¬â union will only let us work sixty hours a week.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, as long as you're trying. How's that old Volvo running?â⬠ââ¬Å"Great. Like a top.â⬠The Volvo had burned to the wheels his first day in the City. ââ¬Å"Swiss sure can build some cars, can't they? Can't say much for those little red pocketknives they make, but sonsabitches can build a car.â⬠ââ¬Å"Swedes.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, well, I love the little meatballs too. Look, kid, your mother's got me deep-frying a turkey out in the driveway. It's starting to smoke a little. I probably oughta should go check on it. Took an hour to get the oil up to speed ââ¬â it's only about ten degrees here today.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, it's a little chilly here, too.â⬠ââ¬Å"Looks like it's starting to catch the carport on fire a little. Better go.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay. Love you, Dad.â⬠ââ¬Å"Call your mother more often, she worries. Holy cats, there goes the Oldsmobile. Bye, son.â⬠A half hour later they were sipping coffee laced with William's blood when the doorbell rang again. ââ¬Å"This is getting irritating,â⬠Jody said. ââ¬Å"Call your mom,â⬠Tommy said. ââ¬Å"I'll get it.â⬠ââ¬Å"We should get some sleeping pills ââ¬â knock him out so he doesn't have to drink all that booze before we bleed him.â⬠The doorbell rang again. ââ¬Å"We just need to get him a key.â⬠Tommy went to the console by the door and pushed the button. There was a buzz and the click of the lock at street level. The door opened ââ¬â William coming in to settle on the stairs for the night. ââ¬Å"I don't know how he sleeps on those steps.â⬠ââ¬Å"He doesn't sleep. He passes out,â⬠said the undead redhead. ââ¬Å"Do you think if we gave him peppermint schnapps the coffee would have a minty holiday flavor?â⬠Tommy shrugged. He went to the door, threw it open, and called down. ââ¬Å"William, you like peppermint schnapps?â⬠William raised a grimy eyebrow, looking suspicious. ââ¬Å"You got something against scotch?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, no, I don't want to mess up your discipline. I was just thinking of a more balanced diet. Food groups, you know.â⬠ââ¬Å"I had some soup and some beer today,â⬠William said. ââ¬Å"Okay then.â⬠ââ¬Å"Schnapps gives me mint farts. They scare the hell out of Chet.â⬠Tommy turned to Jody and shook his head. ââ¬Å"Sorry, no way, minty farts.â⬠Then to William again: ââ¬Å"Okay then, William. I gotta get back to the little woman. You need anything? Food, blanket, toothbrush, a damp towelette to freshen up?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nah, I'm good,â⬠William said. He held up a fifth of Johnny Walker Black. ââ¬Å"How's Chet doing?â⬠ââ¬Å"Stressed. We just found out our friend Sammy got murdered in the hotel on Eleventh.â⬠Chet looked up the stairwell with sad kitty eyes, which he sort of always seemed to have since he'd been shaved. ââ¬Å"Sorry to hear that,â⬠Tommy said. ââ¬Å"Yeah, on Christmas, too,â⬠William said. ââ¬Å"Hooker got killed across the street last night, same way. Neck was snapped. Sammy has been sick for a while, so he splurged on a room for the holiday. Fuckers killed him right there in bed. Just goes to show you.â⬠Tommy had no idea what it went to show you. ââ¬Å"Sad,â⬠Tommy said. ââ¬Å"So how come Chet's stressed but you're not?â⬠ââ¬Å"Chet doesn't drink.â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course. Well then, Merry Christmas to you guys.â⬠ââ¬Å"You, too,â⬠said William, toasting with his bottle. ââ¬Å"Any chance of a Christmas bonus, now that I'm a full-time employee?â⬠ââ¬Å"What'd you have in mind?â⬠ââ¬Å"I'd sure like a gander at Red's bare knockers.â⬠Tommy turned to Jody, who was shaking her head, looking pretty determined. ââ¬Å"Sorry,â⬠Tommy said. ââ¬Å"How about a new sweater for Chet?â⬠William scowled. ââ¬Å"You just can't bargain with The Man.â⬠He took a drink from his bottle and turned away from Tommy as if he had something important to discuss with his huge shaved cat and couldn't be bothered with management. ââ¬Å"Okay then,â⬠Tommy said. He closed the door and returned to the counter. ââ¬Å"I'm The Man,â⬠he said with a big grin. ââ¬Å"Your mom would be so proud,â⬠Jody said. ââ¬Å"We need to go see about Elijah.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not until you call your mom. Besides, he's waited this long, it's not like he's going anywhere.â⬠Jody got up and came around the breakfast bar and took Tommy's hand. ââ¬Å"Sweetie, I need you to play what William just said back in your mind, really slowly.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know, I'm The Man!â⬠ââ¬Å"No, the part about his friend being killed by a broken neck, and how he has been sick, and how someone else was killed the night before, also by broken neck. I'll bet she was sick, too. Sound like a pattern you've heard before?â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh my God,â⬠Tommy said. ââ¬Å"Uh-huh,â⬠Jody said. She held his hand to her lips and kissed his knuckles. ââ¬Å"I'll get my jacket while you fluff up your little brain for traveling, ââ¬Ëkay?â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh my God, you'll do anything to get out of calling your mom.ââ¬

Criminal Justice Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Criminal Justice Law - Essay Example This essay studies the Criminal Justice Law itself and focuses on the concept of ââ¬Å"Arrestable Offencesâ⬠, defined under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984. They enable police to exercise certain related powers like entry to premises, arrest, searches following arrest, and provisions while in custody. Definitions of arrestable offences under Section 24 of the Act include an offence for which the sentence is fixed by law; i.e. murder and offences for which a first time offender of legal age could be sentenced to terms of 5 years or more. Such offences constitute the most common ones including theft, serious assault, burglary and criminal damage. Some other offences are listed in a separate schedule of the act, which did not attract 5 year sentences but are to be considered in the same category as arrestable offences. These include offences like possession of offensive weapons, ticket touting etc. This list has expanded further with the inclusion of newly created offenc es and the number of exclusions dropped. Finally, the very concept of ââ¬Å"Arrestable Offencesâ⬠disappeared on enactment of the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005 which came into effect from 1st January 2006. The focus now changed to whether arrest is "necessary" in the sense of being under pressure of circumstance or physical or moral compulsion 4 to arrest the relevant person. 5. The change from a statute based decision to arrest or not, to a decision involving discretion on the part of the person making the arrest has serious implications especially in the context of the offendersââ¬â¢ rights.

Its a case study Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Its a case study - Essay Example In the consumer marketing segment, the company has given a guarantee to its customers saying that it would supply any item in any preferred color for five years continuously. So even if a single customer buys a particular product of a particular color, the company is forced to produce that particular product even if it is for a single customer in order to keep up its promise and at the same time safeguard its reputation. The company has got a process based production system which also has certain demerits. The main problem with the process based production system is that two or more jobs undertaken by the production department may come to the same department at the same time. And there is obviously no possibility that the department can work on the same jobs simultaneously. Hence on of the jobs has to be kept waiting. As Focus Plastics Plc., is involved in large scale production, the process based system of production may result in several jobs that may be kept waiting in various departments at different stages. Thus , it is nothing more than a mere waste of time when a major portion of production time actually comprises the time in which jobs are needed to wait for getting processes in different departments and at various stages. Another disadvantage with this kind of production system is that it requires greater employee skill, more employees training, more number of supervisors and complex produc tion control. If we consider the manufacturing system that is being followed by Focus Plastics Plc., it can be noticed that the company has got 24 large injection-moulding machines of different ages. Such machines would definitely need a person with good expertise and at the same time proper amount of training to handle such machines which actually is an expensive task for any organization. Problem 4: The company is also lacking in planning. It was quoted that it had to produce a huge amount of pasta strainers in a particular color which resulted in entire rescheduling along with a waste of one hour's production. This is because of over anticipation of the customers' demand. Problem 5: The company has also got a serious inventory problem. There has been a rapid increase in the inventory of the company over the past 10 years which is evident from the following ratios which are based on the financial information of the company. The major mistake that the company is committing is that it is producing the goods anticipating the customers' demands. But anticipations may or may not be right all the time. If the anticipation is less than the acute value, then the company may lead in to loss of sales. In this case the anticipation is more than the actual value and hence it is resulting in piling up of inventory. Actually, increase in the level of inventory may lead to the product getting outdated because of ageing. Increased inventory may also result in blocking of the working capital and thereby resulting in reduced cash flows. Though Focus Plastic Plc. has considered inventory as a

Pablo Picasso's Illustrations of Balzac's The Unknown Masterpiece Essay
Pablo Picasso's Illustrations of Balzac's The Unknown Masterpiece - Essay Example The essay "Pablo Picasso's Illustrations of Balzac's The Unknown Masterpiece" explores Pablo Picassoââ¬â¢s illustration of Balzacââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The unknown masterpieceâ⬠. It is an edition of a short story by Honore de Balzac. This perception is dependent on the point from which the painting is viewed. The painter is obsessed with his work in which he has considerably spent a long time struggling to complete. Surprisingly, two painters who have been secretly admiring this painterââ¬â¢s work are dumbfounded as they cannot get a clear picture of what the work is. Pablo Picasso, a widely known Spanish painter and sculptor, is fascinated by the mystery behind this art work rendering homage to this kind of creativity. And as part of his printmaking etchings, he writes an accompaniment illustrating the Balzacââ¬â¢s work ââ¬Å"The unknown masterpiece.â⬠Studies done by various scholars reveal that Picassoââ¬â¢s works have had great impacts on the styles of many artis ts even to date. This paper discusses Pablo Picassoââ¬â¢s illustrations of Balzacââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Unknown Masterpieceâ⬠of 1931. Honore de Balzacââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"the unknown masterpieceâ⬠featured in the seventeenth century at a French studio in Paris. First published in 1831 by Balzac in a Parisian newspaper ââ¬Å"Lââ¬â¢Artisteâ⬠, the story reveals a lesson expounding on the statement ââ¬Å"beneath the lines of every book is a faceâ⬠. In this story, a young artist by the name Nicolas Poussin and his guide Francoise Porbus arrive in the studio of the eraââ¬â¢s renowned painter, Master Frenhofer.
Should college athletes be paid to play Research Paper
Should college athletes be paid to play - Research Paper Example Yet again, not all students are interested in playing sports as a side activity. Consequently, apart from their initially decided terms of a sports scholarship, they often get little part in the revenue these sports generate for their school. Critics and coaches are, therefore, now arguing in favor of these players saying that they deserve a share of the revenue, as they for the most part contribute towards generating. The debate is a highly heated one with each side feeling just as strongly of their opinion. The number of college athletes in a particular college can be very significant and all these athletes have a choice of which sport they want to take part at the college level. Some sports may have a high popularity level while others low. Deciding upon paying athletes for playing may compel the college to pay all the athletes for all the different kinds of sports in the college. This may result in heavy payments at the end of the day and it may also reduce the profits earned by the colleges at a massive level. Those who argue in favor of paying athletes generally say that colleges make millions of dollars off these athletes abilities and, therefore, for them to get no money from it is unfair, and, in a sense, exploitation to them (Haden 673). Without these players there would be no generated money, and without this money, many colleges would be unable to function. Colleges gain popularity at the sports arena due to the talented athletes that represent the college in the sports. Earning by the talent of the athletes and not paying those athletes sounds an unfair practice. Accordingly, it seems fair to pay to these players, just as any national sports association would pay its players. But, of course, the counter-argument to this claim is that students should be kept away from the business side of a college, regardless of the link between both elements (Parent 226). College level is the stage where the students explore their talents and

Those Winter Sundays, by Robert Hayden Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Those Winter Sundays, by Robert Hayden - Essay Example The poem can be interpreted in many ways. As an example, it could be interpreted as a son who dislikes his father. It could also be seen as a boy who was longing for the love of his father. However it is interpreted, the fact remains that it is a poem about the coldness that lurks between this boy and his father. Hayden uses metaphors in the poem that match the winter cold. The metaphors are implied more than they are spoken. As an example, the father in the poem ââ¬Å"got up early and put his clothes on in the blueblack coldâ⬠(3). The poem then states about the boy, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d wake and hear the cold splintering, breakingâ⬠(6). When these two sentences are analyzed together, the ââ¬Å"blueblack coldâ⬠(3) of winter is a possible metaphor for an abusive relationship between father and son. The words ââ¬Å"blue blackâ⬠are often associated with ââ¬Å"black and blueâ⬠in terms of a bruise or an injury. The ââ¬Å"cold splintering, breakingâ⬠(6 ) could be a metaphor that is not only about the weather, but the implication that the relationship between the father and his son is also cold, splintering and breaking. Because the boy states that when he wakes up in the morning, he is ââ¬Å"fearing the chronic angers of that houseâ⬠(9), the reader can assume that the boy is abused in some way. There may not be physical abuse at this time because the fatherââ¬â¢s hands are ââ¬Å"crackedâ⬠(3) ââ¬Å"from labor in the weekday whetherâ⬠(4) and it would not be comfortable for him to physically hurt his son but the emotional abuse may have been a part of their everyday life. It appears that there is no mother in this family and the reason that the boy and his father are reacting to each other as they are could have something to do with the motherââ¬â¢s absence. The coldness that they share could be their response to grieving at the loss of the mother. This poem could also be one of the poetââ¬â¢s members. A ccording to C. Ekrem Teymur, Robert Hayden grew up in a Detroit ghetto and he spent is time with his parents, but also with a foster family that lived next door to his family (par. 1). This could have been a reflection of what happened to him in his past. The title of the poem suggests that ââ¬Å"thoseâ⬠were the days that he is remembering, and that in the winter time, this was what happened every winter. The entire poem gives the read a sense of coldness. The winter is very cold with the ââ¬Å"blueblack coldâ⬠ââ¬Å"(2), ââ¬Å"cold splinteringâ⬠(6), and ââ¬Å"driven out the coldâ⬠(11) without replacing it with warmth. There are only two lines that mention some type of warmth: ââ¬Å"when the rooms were warmâ⬠(7) his father would call him. This was interesting because warmth would seem cozy and not something that would happen in this house. When his father called him out of the warmth the boy was, ââ¬Å"fearing the chronic angersâ⬠(9) possibl y, because the cold was what he was used to both in temperature and inside the house with the unspoken cold. One line of the poem is very difficult to understand. ââ¬Å"What did I know of loveââ¬â¢s austere and lonely offices?â⬠(14). I did not understand this last line and it seems to have nothing to do with the rest of the information. How does this fit into the rest of the poem? According to Peter E. Murphy, the word ââ¬Å"officeâ⬠has to be put into a context of doing service to others. Murphy explains that in Catholicism, ââ¬Å"officeâ⬠means the ââ¬Å"daily obligatory prayersâ⬠(16) and therefore the passage could mean that love is lonely in this particular space and it is something that must be done, but does not appear here. I am still not sure of what this means. In

Read the instruction Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Read the instruction - Essay Example James Madison assumes, in his own opinion concerning the human nature that factions are strong in the propensity of humankind, such that humankind can fall into mutual animosity where there is no any presentation of substantial occasion, in most frivolous and vivid distinctions, which have resulted to rekindling the unfriendly passions and the most violent conflicts between the two. The federalist 10 is the most interesting essays of James Madison, written in 1787. This essay talks about the liberty, the role of the factions, and the remedies and the extent to which the government should control the concerns that result from the factions. James Madison follows the description of the factions as the group of citizens that either mounts to the majority or as the minority of the whole citizens, united and prompted by a common interest concerning the rights of the citizens or based on the common interest of the society. Madison interest is majorly on the political and social insecurity c aused by the opponent factions; this implies that Madison has to discover the core structure of the government as a whole. His interest id to discover the best structure of a government that will be able to provide remedies for this faction thus he came up with the Federalists 10, which Madison found to provide the best remedy (Hrebenar, and Bryson 41). James Madison bases his arguments on the effects of the factions and he says that the effects of the factions and the case of liberty are the same thing (Hrebenar, and Bryson 40). Therefore, he opts to go about identifying the effects of the factions and looks forward to identify how the effects of the factions may be controlled. This is evident where he compares liberty to faction and he compares air to fire, he continues to say that none of the two exists without the existence of the other. However, it could not cause a lot of trouble to abolish liberty, which is only important in politics and nourishes the faction rather. This bri ngs out the fact that the factions are very essential to the government and thus removing the factionsââ¬â¢ means that the government would oppress some people, which is against what the government should be doing. He also sees that liberty and factions are very important aspects of the government and he comments that as far as the reasons for man to live are outlined and they have the liberty to exercise it, very various opinions will exist. Therefore, a healthy government is one, which allows expression of citizens, and on the other hand, the government ceases to be healthy incase the causes of factions affect it. However, James Madison suggests that the Republican structure of government can deal and tackle the issues concerning the causes of factions. The Republican mode of a government, as Madison suggests, is able to control the effects of factions more than the way the Democratic structure of government does. The Republican type of government made up of the representatives who carry out the beliefs and the passions of the majority of the citizens representing it. Both the Democrats and the Republicans make up the republic, the two groups, the Democrats, the Republicans cast many varied opinions, and thus they form factions. James Madison also suggests that the structure of the Republican form of government has the ability to defend the rights of the minority and the rights of t

The female form superimposed onto a natural landscape can be seen as a Essay
The female form superimposed onto a natural landscape can be seen as a naturally beautiful, without connotations of sexism or sexual agenda - Essay Example As infants we all unconditionally love our mothers, we are tended by her hands, suckle on her bosom and kissed by her. The comeliness of women- her curves and shape are features that are characteristic of Nature as well. Across eastern cultures, the features of a woman have been compared to instances of Nature. In fact, Nature in itself is considered feminine because of being beautiful and hence, we can see that beauty and woman are synonymous to each other. To portray the real divine beauty of women, it was considered essential by artists to depict them raw and unclad i.e. naked. It is a movement since ancient times which is rampant even till this date. A classic example of a nude painting is Picassoââ¬â¢s Demoiselles dââ¬â¢Avignon.1 In Picassoââ¬â¢s favorite cubist form, the painting shows a group of nude women where the shapes of the women are taken from multiple perspectives all conjoined together at once, providing a menagerie of angles to look from and admire the beauty of a woman. Through my paintings I have tried to bring both the beautiful creations together i.e. Woman and Nature. The portrayal of the nude female form in a natural landscape is beautiful many times over. In a world such as we live in today, sadly, nudity and sexuality have attained similar connotations. Deluged by ad-campaigns, movie clichà ©s and other forms of media, we believe that nudity is important for sex appeal. What shocks me is that women itself are blinkered and misled, tending to believe that nudity is a prerequisite for being attractive. Through my paintings, I have tried to depict the original concept of beauty which has permeated the world since ancient times and has inspired mankind to arts and culture. Like any other person, I am intrigued by both Women and Nature and through my paintings I have tried to elucidate myself and others of the real essence of pulchritudinous and have violated the current concept of the sexual imagery of a naked woman.

High proven Diet Food Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
High proven Diet Food - Assignment Example There have been differences in consideration of what is high protein diet. Diets that have 30% proteins have been mostly considered as just reasonable amounts of proteins. The ones that have 50% or more are the ones that are actually considered as the ones with high protein diets. The doctors also point out the fact that diets that are high in protein and are moderate in carbs are mostly considered by experts to be able to help people reduce their blood fats. The high protein foods also assist in the maintenance of lean tissue while still burning the body fats for fuel (Bailey, 1991). Study carried out left researchers wondering how the protein works towards reducing appetite. Some think that this may be made possible by the fact that the proteins enable the brain to acquire very minimal levels of hormones that stimulate appetite. This is the main reason brought to the frontline in this discussion. Though the findings still remain inconclusive and the doubt still lingers on the mind of the researchers. The jury is still out on the other findings that arose from the research carried out to determine how the protein intake can work towards the reduction of appetite among the people who maintain protein intake. The study further tends to explain the fact that small amounts of insulin are possibly influenced to facilitate less sugar level fluctuations that in effect lead to fewer instances of cravings. The result may be arrived at by eating fewer carbs, or even when individual proteins facilitate brain chemistry to control hunger hormones (Katan, 1997). Further research done by scientific researchers point out that people should boost levels of protein in diet. New research hints at the possibility that protein has the ability to satisfy hunger, better more as compared to carbohydrates or even fats. During the duration of study, individuals were taken through a sort of diet whereby fat intake was reduced while protein levels increased. The same diet had 50% carbs. It was later discovered that these individuals were more satisfied, had lost weight and were less hungry. On further field, a similar study carried out on the effect of such high levels of proteins mixed with exercise. The people who participated in this study had lost much weight and had raised levels of blood fat (Bailey, 1991). The essential explanation given that makes proteins necessary elements for the body is that protein is good for growth. It is necessary in all stages of life as it constitutes the major elements of the cells such as bone and muscles. Proteins are needed for development, growth as well as the immunity needed to assist in fighting off diseases and for the protection of the body. Patients who want to stay healthy enough to enable them fight diseases as well as to assist in controlling the body size (Katan, 1997). Recommendations from DRI, which deals majorly with dietary information, state that a wide range of protein intake should be implemented. The recomme nded range should be between 10% and 35% of all the calories for the normal adult. This means that that on a diet of 1800 calories, it is safe to consume between 45 and 218 grams daily of protein. Further recommendations state that men should have an average intake of 56 grams in a day while women should strive to have an average intake of 46 grams so as to enjoy the benefits. There is no confirmed danger that can arise

Transition: IIBody I: A. Main Point 1 The ancient art of palm reading, also called palmistry or hiromancy, dates back thousands of years. Prehistoric caves in Spain and France have hands drawn on their walls with all the major lines shown in amazing detail. Cultures around the world have been turning to the fine art of palmistry for hundreds of years in an attempt to unlock the mysteries of the cosmos Palm reading, otherwise known as palmistry or chiromancy, is practiced all over the world, with roots in Indian astrolog y and gypsy fortune-tellingalmistry or palm reading, also known as chiromancy, comes from the Greek words, kheiros, which means hand, and manteia which means oracle, divination. Body II:. A. Main Point 2: A palm reader starts with the obvious and carries on via innumerous intricate steps of interpretation and judgment, to minute details. The conclusions that are made are not about certainty, but of the tendency or probability. A practitioner of palmistry usually starts by studying both hands; if you are a right-handed person your left hand is thought to be the birth hand, which reveals character predispositions that are inherited, while the right hand is considered as reflecting individuality, potential, and flexibility. For left-handed people, its the other way round. Here is a general explanation of the various types of hands, according to palmistry: So, which of the hands must you look at if you want to find out? Each hand tells a different story. There is an active hand and a dormant hand Traditionally, most palmists have advocated examining the left hand of women and the right hand of men. However, this approach will only give you half of the story of your volunteerââ¬â¢s life. Instead of limiting yourself to just one hand, take a closer look at both hands to see what deep secrets can be revealed. Many modern palmists now believe that a personââ¬â¢s non-dominant hand will show you their personality and proclivities, while their dominant hand will show you how they have applied their talents and ambitions in life. By using both hands when you read palms you can see where your volunteer has been and where theyââ¬â¢re going to go. In palm reading, According to Chinese palm reading, the left hand is used for men below 30 years old; while for women below 30 years old, the right hand is referred for palm reading. The Hands Lean and firm hands indicate that the person is very economical. â⬠¢Firm and strong hands mean that the individual has a dependable character. â⬠¢If the palms of the hands are cupped deeply, it usually is indicative that the person will not be good in business. â⬠¢A flabby and soft hand is a sign that the person likes an easy life. For females, the right hand is what youre born with, and left is what youve accumulated throughout your life For mal e, the left hand is what youre born with, and right is what youve accumulated throughout your life. Your dominant hand represents changes and developments in your talents and personality the right side represents individual talent and personality; The active hand represents how you will be able to change your life and your future Your weak hand tells you about your natural personality, the traits you were born with. while the left side indicates potentiality. the dormant hand denotes your inherent qualities and hidden potential by ways of genetics or those which are hereditary. Size: A person with large hands is somebody who would think first and then act while a person with small hands is more active and impulsive and thinks a lot less. The texture of the hand is also a key to the persona of the person. This has to be observed for both, the back and front of the hand or palm. A soft textured hand shows sensitivity and refinement. A coarse textured hand will depict a coarse nature. Calluses will show that the person is either a hardworking person or has a job where he has to work with his hands a lot. Note the texture of the hand, front and back. Soft hands signify sensitivity and refinement, while rough hands signifies a coarse temperament Flexibility of the Thumb: If the persons thumb is flexible to a certain extend, it would mean that he/she is quite accommodating, easy-going and adaptable, while people with more rigid thumbs are pretty obstinate. The flexibility of the hand shows the adjustable nature of the person. The more flexible the hand, the more adjusting his nature is. On the contrary, if the hand is stiff, the person has a rigid personality. People whose fingers can be very easily bent back (90 degrees to the palm) are pushovers. This is also an important aspect to consider in palm reading. The shape of the nails also gives us an insight into the personality traits of the person. Long nails which taper at the tips show creativity; while square nails show orderliness. The color of the hands shows the nature of blood circulation in the persons body. A pinkish colored hand, therefore, shows a healthy individual. Yellow denotes excessive bile production. Blue color shows a circulation problem. 1. Supporting Point: For instance, if youre right-handed then your right hand is the active hand and left hand is the dormant one. And if youre left-handed, its vice versa 2Supporting Point: 3. Supporting Point: Transition: It is a mysterious occurrence that the lines on our palms happen to depict the small and large changes in our lives. These lines are also constantly forming, changing, and disappearing. These lines have fascinated mankind for ages IV. BODY IV: , Palmistry with Mounts A. Main Point 3: The study of palmistry includes deciphering the meaning of lines on the palms. Apart from these lines, there are various mounts on the hand, which stand for certain qualities. These are also important, as are the lines that are on or emerge from these mounts. T he palm mounts are the little mounds of flesh that raise out of the palm (like at the base of each finger. ) The Institute of Palmistry says that mounts are representative of various types of brain activity The mounts are indicative of many traits including ambition, artistic appreciation, courage, and imagination among many others . Texture, firmness, and size are a factor in analyzing mounts 1. Apart from the lines, the texture of the palm, the color, flexibility, shape and size of fingers and nails, etc. also tell a lot about the persons nature Here is some general information about these mounts. 2. Korean Drink Sikhye Essay Example for Free
Korean Drink Sikhye Essay Seol, the biggest traditional Korean holiday of the year, is when family members gather and eat a traditional meal with a variety of dishes which eventually, leads to overeating. What drink is used help digest all those food, Sikhye. Sikhye is a sweet drink made of malt and rice that has been a traditional beverage throughout Korean culture. It was first introduced in a book on knowledge of living called Samunsaseol in 1740. In the 1800s the recipe was revealed in cook books named Gyungonyoram and Siuijeonseo. There are various kinds of sikhye, Andong sikhye, Jinju sikhye, dried meat sikhye from Gyeongsangdo, dried pollack sikhye from Gangwondo, halibut sikhye from Hamgyeongdo, sailfin sandfish sikhye, and yeonan sikhye. It is said that Sikhye was created in North Korea and made mainly of fishes, powdered red pepper, and radish. Then it was introduced in the South and instead of fishes, malt was put in. After that it gradually known to be established with malt and rice only. Sikhye is a fermented drink made through patience. This drink was first drunk due to its job of stimulating digestion. Sikhye is also referred to dansul or gamju. While Sikhye is rice punch with rice floating in it, gamju is rice punch without rice floating in it. The famous drink is made by pouring malt water into boiled glutinous rice to leave for a while to ferment. Then the rice is removed from the water and rinsed and drained. The remaining water is boiled with sugar and ginger and served cool with the rice. The taste of this refreshment is the malt that is used. Malt is also significant due to its nutritional value. Sikhye is a natural sweet drink made without any artificial sweeteners. This drink prevents food from decomposing in our bodies and has anti-cancer substances. That is why it is important to drink sikhye after a meal. Due to this fact, it was served to Kings as a dessert. The beverage helps balance the body warming a cold body and cooling a hot body. Therefore it is good for diets and hangovers. Sikhye, one of the most cherished Korean drinks, is an important factor in Korean Culture. With its refreshing while unique sweet taste, it grabs people from different ethnicities. It is found in almost every Korean grocery store. While its great while bought, it best when homemade especially in Korea. In Korea, homemade Sikhye is naturally made which makes it distinctive from other drinks. It is known to be one of the best drinks in the culture. There are little ingredients that go in Sikhye, but there it needs a lot of patience to make. The ingredients in this refreshment are Korean rice, malt powder, warm water, caster sugar, ginger, and pine nuts if want to garnish. When making sikhye, what you need to do first is to mix warm water and powdered malt and leave it for three to four hours until the water becomes yellowish. The next step is to mix hard-boiled rice with the malt water in a small earthenware jar and keep it warm for four to five hours. The temperature should be kept at 60 to 70 degrees. If it were lower or higher temperatures, it would spoil the fermentation process. After about four hours, open the jar and check to see if the grains of rice are floating and if they are, take the rice out of the jar using a strainer, and rinse it with cold water and place it in a separate container. Then refrigerate the rice. The next step is to boil the remaining water and add some sugar for taste. Remove the foam that appears on the surface while boiling. After boiling the water, put it in a jar and refrigerate it, to make it cold. When served in special occasions, pour the water in a glass bowl and put the floating rice and other ingredients for decoration. If need more sweetening, add more sugar. This is how to prepare Sikhye and serve it during occasions.

Mulligan Vs Maitland Talar Glide Health And Social Care Essay
Mulligan Vs Maitland Talar Glide Health And Social Care Essay Does Mulligans anterior-to-posterior talar glide is effective in improving dorsiflexion in subjects with acute ankle inversion sprain than Maitlands anterior-to-posterior talar glide mobilization. Design: Experimental, Comparative, Randomized Controlled Trail-single blinded study. Participants: 90 samples with acute ankle inversion sprain diagnosed by radiologist through X-Ray imaging will be collected with convenience sampling. Intervention: Based on inclusion and exclusion criteria subjects randomly allocated to 3 groups of intervention- Group I Mulligans anterior-to-posterior talar glide along with RICE, Group II Maitlands anterior-to-posterior talar glide along with RICE, Group III RICE (control group) for 2 weeks. Outcome Measures: Pre and Post session, measurement of dorsiflexion range of motion will be taken with Modified Lidcombe templates. Duration: The expected duration of study is considered 8months for ethical clearance, data collection and analysis, editing and publis hing. Budget: An estimation of Rs 30,000 is made including the investigation, instruments, materials and refreshments. BACKGROUND Ankle is a complex joint which is categorized as a hinge joint. It is one of the important component for ambulation in humans. Ankle sprains are one of the commonest injuries in athletics. It accounts for 20% of all sports injuries (Bergfeld J; 2004).In India, incidence rate of ankle sprain accounts for 0.31% of the population and the chances of re-injury is seen as high as 78-80% despite the continued research in this field (Statistics for ankle sprain; 2003). The pathomechanics for ankle inversion injury is inversion and plantar flexion of the ankle joint. There is loss of dorsiflexion and inversion range of motion which is attributed to pain and swelling (Denegar CR et al; 2002), (Collins et al; 2004).According to Denegar C et al (2002) the loss of dorsiflexion range of motion is due to restriction of posterior talar glide. This suggests that in an acute ankle inversion sprain the loss of dorsiflexion range of motion could be due to mechanical dysfunction in talocrural joint. The conventional treatment for acute ankle sprain is RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation). The main aim of conventional treatment (RICE) is primarily to reduce pain and inflammation (Starkey JA; 1976), (Slatyer MA et al; 1997). The conventional treatment (RICE) with early movement is found to be more effective for reducing pain, swelling and improving mobility (Dettori et al; 1994). Because of the ineffectiveness of conventional treatment for treating the positional dysfunction caused due to acute ankle inversion injury the joint becomes more susceptible to injury (Hertel J et al, 1999). Manual Therapy focuses on reduction of pain and correction of the postural and movement dysfunction due to ankle sprain. According to Maitland grades of mobilization grade I and II mobilization is used in acute condition and grade II mobilization is seem effective in reducing pain and improving dorsiflexion range of movement in acute musculoskeletal conditions. Maitland grades of mobilization improves the ankle dorsiflexion in acute ankle inversion sprain (Green et al; 2001) and reduces pain by modulation of nervous tissue (Vincenzino B et al; 1998). According to Maitland GD (1986), passive joint mobilization improves the range of movement by gentle oscillatory movement of the articular surfaces that creates movement of the mobile segments by a means other than the muscles .According to Collins et al (2004), Mulligans mobilization with movement technique is effective in reducing pain and improves dorsiflexion of ankle joint. A single case study done by O Brien, B.Vincenzino (1998) sh owed that Mulligan Mobilization with movement technique on acute ankle sprain improved the range of movement (dorsiflexion and inversion), functional outcome and reduced the pain. According to pilot study conducted by John-Mark Chesney, Erin Morris, Mulligans mobilization with movement technique and taping had significant effect on temporal and spatial parameters of gait. Immediate decrease in pain and an early return to function are claimed to be result of Mulligans mobilization with movement Mulligan 1995; Vincenzino Wright 1995; Hetherington 1996). However, the lack of adequate evidence in literature for the effectiveness of Mulligans anterior-to-posterior talar glide with movement technique in acute ankle inversion sprain failed to prove its clinical and statistical significance in research methods. The above literature also shows lack of studies done to compare the effects of Maitland and Mulligan mobilization technique in treatment of acute ankle inversion sprain. Hence, the aim of the study is to find the immediate effect of Mulligans anterior-to-posterior talar mobilization with movement technique in acute ankle inversion sprain with RICE and compare the results with that of Maitland anterior-to-posterior talar glide mobilization with RICE for treatment of acute ankle inversion sprain. REVIEW OF LITERATURE Ankle joint is a complex joint due to its articular, ligamentous and tendinous anatomy. The anterior talofibular ligament restricts anterior translation and internal rotation of talus inside the mortise. The coupled motion during plantar flexion happens as internal rotation and anterior translation of talus aided by deltoid ligament. The calcaneofibular ligament restricts inversion of the talocrural and subtalar joint. The posterior talofibular ligament restricts inversion and internal rotation after calcaneofibular ligament and anterior talofibular ligament undergo injury. According to Konradsen and Voight (2002) an inversion torque was produced on loading a cadaveric leg, when the unloaded foot was positioned in 30 degree inversion, full plantar flexion and 10 degree internal tibial rotation. The collision with 20 degree inverted foot in swing phase follow through forced the foot into full limit of inversion, plantar flexion and internal tibial rotation. According to Denegar CR et al (2002) in normal biomechanics the instantaneous axis of rotation of talocrural joint translates posteriorly during dorsiflexion, but in anterior malaligned talus or with restricted posterior talar glide the axis of rotation is shifted anteriorly leading to joint dysfunction. According to Baumhauer JF et al (1995) previous history of sprain, limited range of motion and reduced dorsiflexor and plantar flexor strength ratio, elevated eversion to inversion ratio have been attributed to predisposing to inversion injury. According to Eren OT et al (2003) high malleolar index (posteriorly positioned fibula) is attributed to predisposing factor to sprain. Average malleolar index was +11.5 degree in subjects with ankle sprain and +5.85 degree in normal controls. Green T in 2001 used a Modified Lidcombe Template to measure the pain free dorsiflexion range of motion occurring in talocrural joint. The template consisted of 2 boards joined by an adjustable hinge. One board served as a footplate and other was placed under the subjects calf. The adjustable hinge served as the axis of rotation of template in vertical plane and the board placed under the subjects calf allowed for adjustment in horizontal plane. The measurement was standardized by measuring both force applied and the angle of dorsiflexion at which the subject first experienced the pain (Matyas T, Bach T; 1985). The force applied was standardized throughout the trail by spring balance and the direction of force was standardized by spirit level attached to the spring. The device showed high intrarater and interrater reliability of which 29% were in exact agreement and 84.5% were within 2 degrees, ICC=0.94. The conventional management of ankle sprain is RICE in acute stage of injury. The functional treatment procedures with early initiation of weight bearing as tolerated, early mobilization, proprioceptive training, balance training has been advocated to provide early functional rehabilitation to subjects. According to Bahr R (2004) and Bruce Beynnon B, (2004) the management of sprain concentrates on static and dynamic stability, gaining normal ankle range of motion, optimal strength of peroneal, dorsiflexors, plantar flexors, and invertor muscles of ankle and retraining ankle strategy. According to Kerkhoffs et al (2002) functional treatment is superior to immobilization and surgical intervention in areas of pain on activity, quality of performance on return to sport/work, objectives instability on x-ray views and patient satisfaction. Manual therapy in ankle inversion sprain Maitlands Mobilization Green et al (2001) conducted a randomized controlled trial of passive accessory joint mobilization on acute ankle inversion sprain. The study included 38 subjects with acute ankle inversion sprain( Elizabeth L et al (2008) conducted a study in which 10 subjects were taken with immobilized ankle for at least 14 days and presented with at least 5 degree of dorsiflexion deficit compared to contralateral ankle. A crossover design was employed and subjects received Maitlands grade 3 mobilization in one group and control intervention (no treatment) in other group. Results showed that joint mobilization led to a reduction in pain and improvements in pain-free dorsiflexion. Mulligan mobilization with movement technique Collins et al (2004) conducted a double-blinded randomized controlled trial with a crossover design approach. In this study 14 subjects with grade 2 ankle sprain were taken. The dorsiflexion in weight-bearing and thermal pain threshold were calculated. All the subjects undergo 3 treatment conditions-Mulligans mobilization with movement technique for dorsiflexion, placebo group and control group (no treatment). Results showed that the talar anterior-to-posterior glide improved the recovery rate in treatment with Mulligans mobilization with movement technique. The study conducted by Collins N was done on subjects with sub acute ankle sprain. T OBrien, B.Vincenzino (1998) conducted a single case study to investigate the effects of Mulligans with movement technique mobilization for acute lateral ankle sprain. The technique used in this study was posterior glide to distal fibular while patient actively inverted the ankle. In the study 2 subjects with acute ankle sprain were used to control for natural resolution of ankle sprain. Subject I underwent ABAC protocol while subject II BABAC protocol where A was no treatment phase B was treatment phase and C was post treatment return to sport phase. The outcome measures Modified Kaikkonen test functional outcome, VAS for pain and range of dorsiflexion and inversion were measured pre and post of each intervention session. Results showed rapid improvement of range of motion (inversion and dorsiflexion) and immediate decrease in pain. Hence from the above studies we can infer that anterior-to-posterior talar glide technique in both Maitland and Mulligan mobilization is effective in treating ankle inversion sprain than the RICE protocol alone. The above studies also infer that Maitlands grades of mobilization is significantly effective in improving dorsiflexion range in acute ankle sprain. However, Mulligans mobilization had shown effective results in treating ankle sprain in subacute condition. The study done by T OBrien, B.Vincenzino (1998) shows the effectiveness of Mulligans mobilization with movement technique in improving dorsiflexion range of motion in acute ankle sprain but the study design leads to limitation of generalization of its findings. However, it does provide the knowledge to conduct a random clinical trail in utility of Mulligans mobilization with movement technique in the treatment of acute ankle inversion sprain and to compare the results with Maitlands grades of mobilization to find the best e ffective treatment method for improving the recovery rate in acute ankle inversion sprain. IDENTIFICATION OF RESEARCH PROPOSAL QUESTION Does Mulligans anterior-to-posterior talar glide is effective in improving dorsiflexion in subjects with acute ankle inversion sprain than Maitlands anterior-to-posterior talar glide mobilization. ALTERNATE HYPOTHESIS Mulligans anterior-to-posterior talar glide is effective than Maitlands grades of mobilization in improving dorsiflexion range of motion in subjects with acute ankle inversion sprain. NULL HYPOTHESIS Mulligans anterior-to-posterior talar glide is not effective than Maitlands grades of mobilization in improving dorsiflexion range of motion in subjects with acute ankle inversion sprain. METHODOLOGY Design An Experimental, Comparative, Randomized Controlled Trail design. The study will be single blinded to avoid any possible bias. The subjects will be allocated to 3 group of interventions-Mulligans anterior-to-posterior talar glide with movement technique with RICE, Maitlands anterior-to-posterior talar glide mobilization with RICE, and third group RICE alone .Outcome measure will measure the degree of dorsiflexion pre and post to each session which will be measured by the assessor blinded to the allocation of subjects to the groups. Subjects The study will be conducted by recruiting 90 samples through convenience sampling by giving advertisements and notices to orthopaedic and physiotherapy department in MS Ramaiah Memorial hospital and the hospitals nearby its surrounding areas. The subjects recruited will be diagnosed for acute ankle inversion sprain and referred by radiologist through X-Ray imaging. To maintain the homogeneity of the groups all the subjects will be recruited based on Inclusion and exclusion criteria. Inclusion criteria-All subjects of age group 20-30years of age, History of ankle inversion injury with pain over lateral aspect of ankle ( ETHICAL APPROVAL The ethical approval will be taken from Ethical Board of MS Ramaiah Memorial Hospital along with the permission of other hospitals near by its surroundings. Subjects will be given a copy of informed consent with the details of the study and the confidentiality of patients personnel information and data obtained after the study will be maintained. Subjects can withdraw from study at any given point of time. VENUE/LOCATION OF THE STUDY The study will be conducted in MS Ramaiah Memorial Hospital Physiotherapy Department, Bangalore. A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRAIL STUDY An experimental randomized controlled trail -single blinded study will be conducted on 90 subjects with acute ankle inversion sprain. The technique of the interventions will be finalized during the study and side-effects or any error in the intervention will be noted and rectified. RESEARCH METHOD AND EXPERIMENTAL INTERVENTION 90 samples will be recruited by convenience sampling. The samples will be assessed for acute ankle inversion sprain by X-Ray imaging done by the radiologist in radiology department of MS Ramaiah Memorial Hospital. The subjects will be randomly assigned to 3 groups by chit method. Each group will be assigned 30 subjects. The researcher who will conduct the study is a qualified physiotherapist who specializes in manual therapy. After the allocation of the group the experimental group I will receive Mulligans anterior to posterior talar glide along with active dorsiflexion of ankle which will be followed by RICE application. The mobilization will be performed in weight bearing in which the therapist applies a postero-anterior force to distal leg through a treatment belt while stabilizing the foot and talus (Mulligan; 1999).The experimental group II will receive Maitlands anterior-to-posterior talar glide (Grade II) followed by RICE application. The mobilization will be performed with subject lying supine and the ankle will be positioned over the edge of plinth with proximal hand of therapist stabilizing the distal tibia and fibula while the distal hand will mobilize the talus with posteriorly directed oscillation(Maitland;1977).Group III will receive RICE treatm ent for maximum of 2 weeks. Subjects in experimental group I and II will be treated every second day for maximum of 2 weeks. Therefore 6 sessions of treatment over 14 days will be done. Three sets of 10 repetitions will be applied with 1 minute between sets (Exelby, 1996) in both mobilization technique. Pain experienced during treatment will result in immediate cessation of technique and exclusion of the subject from study. OUTCOME MEASURES Dorsiflexion range of motion will be measured by Modified Lidcombe template. The template enabled standardized measurement of dorsiflexion range of movement. The axis of rotation of ankle was aligned with adjustable axis of rotation of template. The spring balance attached to the footplate measure the force applied in the standardized direction. A hydrogoniometer placed on the footplate measures the range of dorsiflexion in degrees. The template have a high intrarater and interrater reliability of which 29% were in exact agreement and 84.5% were within 2 degrees, ICC=0.94. Hydrogoniometer have high intraclass coefficients (0.84-0.99) which revealed high agreement between the raters (Lex D.De jong et al; 2007) RESULTS AND DATA ANALYSIS The dorsiflexion range of movement measured will be in degrees which represent a parametric data. The data collected pre and post of each 6 session in group I and group II will be analyzed by related t test (i.e. within the group) and unrelated t test will be done to compare between the group I and group II for dependent variable. One way ANOVA will be used for analysis of data from all the 3 groups along with Scheffe test to find the most effective group for treatment of acute ankle inversion sprain. The level of significance will be set at 0.5; the probability will be calculated based on the t value with degree of freedom table. The confidence interval will be kept to 95%. ANNEXURE PROJECT TIMELINE The overall estimated time required for the completion of the study is 8months i.e. 1 month for ethical clearance, 4 months for the randomized controlled trail, data collection and data analysis, 1 month for writing up and presenting results and 2 months for publishing results. slavery and the plantation Essays -- Slavery Essays
slavery and the plantation During the era of slavery in the United States, not all blacks were slaves. There were a many number of free blacks, consisting of those had been freed or those in fact that were never slave. Nor did all slave work on plantations. There were nearly five hundred thousand that worked in the cities as domestic, skilled artisans and factory hands (Green, 13). But they were exceptions to the general rule. Most blacks in America were slaves on plantation-sized units in the seven states of the South. And with the invent of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney, more slaves were needed to work the ever-growing cotton game (Frazier, 14). The size of the plantations varied with the wealth of the planters. There were small farmers with two or three slaves, planters with ten to thirty slaves and big planters who owned a thousand or more slaves. Scholars generally agree that slaves received better treatment on the small farms and plantation that did not employ overseers or general managers. Almost half of the slaves, however, live, worked and died on plantations where the owners assigned much of their authority to overseers. The plantation was a combination factory, village and police precinct. The most obvious characteristic was the totalitarian regime placed on the slave. One example of this was a communal nursery, which prepared slave children for slavery and made it possible for their mothers to work in the fields. The woman who cared for black children was commonly designated "aunty" to distinguish her from the "mammy", the nurse of white children. Sometimes one women cared for both white and black children. Boys and girls wandered in around in a state of near-nudity until they reached the age of work. On some plantations they were issued tow-linen shirts, on others they wore guano bags with holes punched in them for the head and arms. Children were never issued shoes until they were sent to the fields, usually at the age of six or seven. Young workers were broken in as water boys or in the the "trash gang." At the age of ten or twelve, children were given a regular field routine. A former slave recalls, "Children had to go to the fiel' at six on out place. Maybe they don't do nothin' but pick up stones or tote water, but thy got to get used to bein' there." (Johnson, 40-45) Cooking on the plantation was a collect... ... with children would be less likely to attempt escape. The marriage ceremony was instructed by the wisest and most respected slave on the plantation, and included the ritual of jumping the broomstick. Males and females were expected to remain faithful after the marriage. The marriages lasted a long time, some thirty years or more. The life on the plantation was the only life known to a slave. Few slaves ever had the opportunity to leave the plantation so it was the only world they knew. One can think of a plantation as an isolated island, with occasional contact from the outside world. It was only through making contact with the outside world that slaves became aware that they too deserved freedom and gained the knowledge to obtain it. BIBLIOGRAPHY E.Franklin Frazier. Lumiere Brothers :: essays papers
Lumiere Brothers A documentary usually captures the truth on camera. Louis and Auguste Lumiere projected the first film for a paying audience in March 1895 called Workers leaving the factory. Then later on the brothers screened ten films. Their films showed events in their everyday life and of their children. Throughout the filming of this documentary the voice over of Bertard Travanier is heard. At the beginning the film looks similar to a slide show, a series of photographs with smooth transitions dissolves and fade-ins show a smoother presentation than a slide show. As Bertard speaks of the brothers and the effects of editing you are able to see there is no editing, just scenes of people walking. Since the cinematographe could only film 50 seconds after being cranked up every time that the 50 seconds is up you are able to actually see it the break in the film. I think the Lumiere films are so interesting because you witness the Lumiereââ¬â¢s home life but in a way that exposes the different aspects of film they were trying to explore. My favorite was when the little girl was learning to walk and you are able to see this big crack in the sidewalk ahead of her. They called it the first suspense movie and it is so humorous because it is true. As the little girl is walking I am wondering if she is going to fall or if the person behind her will catch her, SUSPENSE. In the end she falls. One of the so-called ââ¬Å"masterpiecesâ⬠was first shown, the pulling up of the train at the train station. The train is coming at a diagonal so it looks as if the train is going to speed right through the screen. It was rumored that people were scared and ran( Martin Nov5). Nowadays, that would seem ridiculous but back then I could see how it could scare them. In one segment where the Lumiere Brothers are knocking down a wall they accidently discovered what would occur if the film was rewound and Louis decided to use this in his movie.
white fang Essay -- essays research papers
During Jack Londonââ¬â¢s life he has written many great novels, perhaps the greatest was White Fang. In 1906 he wrote the legendary novel about a stray wolf reverting to domestication. The majority of this book concerns White Fangsââ¬â¢ struggles with savage nature, Indians, dogs and white men. However, we also see White Fang is tamed by love and turns from a savage wolf into a loving and domesticated dog. White Fang begins with two men traveling through the artic with a dog team and sled, followed by a pack of famished wolves who pick off the dogs, one by one at night and eventually gets one of the men. The point of view then shifts to wolves and stays with them for nearly the entire story. ââ¬Å"Over Jack London life he has wrote many books with Darwin's popular ideas in mind, particularly White Fang1 â⬠. The process of "natural selection" means that only the strongest, brightest, and most adaptable elements of a species will survive. This idea is embodied by the character, White Fang. From the onset, he is the strongest wolf cub, the only one of the litter to survive the famine. His strength and intelligence make him the most feared dog in the Indian camp. While defending Judge Scott, Weedon Scottââ¬â¢s father, White Fang takes three bullets but is miraculously able to survive. One element of the book one might overlook is White Fang's ability to adapt to any new circumstances and somehow survive. He learns how to fight the other dogs, he learns to obey new masters, he learns to fight under the evil guidance of Beauty and, finally, he learns to love and be tamed by Weedon Scott. In the novel White Fang by Jack London, the main character learns to adapt to its surroundings ultimately leading to his domestication. There are many ways that the wild has influenced White Fang throughout his life. The beginning of this novel gives us one glimpse into the possible "other life" for White Fang. London chooses to show us the development White Fang, from a scientific perspective. ââ¬Å"He compares the puppies to plants, and shows how even without consciousness; they are drawn toward the light2â⬠. He also shows us White Fangs exploration of the outside - he thinks that he could walk on water, but then learns that it moves and is wet, and learns that itââ¬â¢s a stream. His descriptions show us the world as a wolf-pup. We understand what London means by the "wall of ligh... ...ng to his domestication. White Fang is tamed by love and turns from a savage wolf into a loving and home-keeping dog. However through the incident in San Francisco we can see that White Fang can easily revert back to his old ways. During the ending of the novel an incident occurs when a convict, Jim Hall, breaks into Judge Scott's home to "wreak vengeance" on the man who "railroaded" him into prison. Judge Scott's life is saved by White Fang, who very nearly loses his own life before slashing the throat of the killer. Jim Hall is a mad dog that must be destroyed for the safety of respectable citizens. In his encounter with the convict, White Fang has suffered several bullet wounds and is critically injured. But White Fang beats the odds and lives to be christened; the Scott family now calls him ââ¬Å"The Blessed Wolfâ⬠. He lives, because of his extraordinary natural toughness, and his legacy of the wild, thus this shows the great power that is his, the p ower that he relaxes into love and ease but still keeps ready in case there is need for it in the treacherous world. Most of this book concerns White Fangââ¬â¢s struggles with savage nature, Indians, dogs, and white men.
